The principles adopted by Gilbertson & Page Ltd are founded on the Ethical Trading Initiative base code. Gilbertson & Page Ltd. will, as far as is reasonably practical, ensure that they and their suppliers adhere to the minimum policy requirements as stated below:
(a) There will be no forced or bonded labour. No deposits or papers are required to be lodged with the employer and employees are free to leave their employer after reasonable notice.
(b) Employees must be free to choose whether or not to associate with any group that is legal in that country. Employees have the right to join or form trade unions and to bargain collectively. The employer adopts an open attitude towards the activities of trade unions. Workers representatives are not subject to discrimination.
(c) Safe and hygienic working conditions will be provided for employees and none will be
subjected to dangerous practices. Training will be supplied and documented with information on health and safety available. Employees will have access to clean toilet facilities and to potable water and, if appropriate, sanitary facilities for food storage shall be provided. Accommodation, where appropriate, shall be clean, safe and meet the basic needs of employees. The employer shall assign responsibility to a senior management representative.
(d) The use of child labour is not acceptable. All labour must be older than the statutory minimum of the country.
(e) Employees will be remunerated at a fair market rate and at a minimum to the national legal standard or comparable with similar industries, whichever is the higher. Employees shall be provided with written information about their employment conditions so far as wages are concerned before they enter employment and shall be given payslips each time they are paid. Deductions shall not be made without the express permission of the employee concerned.
(f) Working hours should be reasonable and at a minimum to the national legal standard or comparable with similar industries, whichever affords the greater protection. Appropriate breaks will be given and overtime shall be voluntary and always compensated at a premium rate.
(g) Employees will be provided with equal opportunities regardless of race, caste, national origin, religion, age, disability, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, union membership or political affiliation.
(h) Work performed must be on the basis of a recognised employment relationship established through national law and practice to every extent possible.
(i) No physical abuse, verbal abuse, threat of abuse or harassment of any kind will be tolerated.
The provisions of this policy constitute a minimum and exceeding these basic requirements is encouraged. Companies supplying Gilbertson & Page Ltd are expected to comply with national and other applicable law and where the above statement addresses the same subject, apply that provision which affords greater protection.
